Essential Camping Items

Many people enjoy camping as a fun family hobby.  They love the thrill of sleeping in the great outdoors.  Most people refer to this as roughing it.  This means they are going without the normal comforts that we all take for granted, like electricity, running water and comfortable beds.  There are some helpful do’s and don’ts that might make you more likely to enjoy “roughing it”.

Do’s
1. Do take plastic cups, plates and utensils.  When you get home you already have to unpack everything and do loads of laundry, why add washing dishes to your to do list?
2. Do invest in some sort of mattress pad.  The ground is hard, not to mention cold and your sleeping bag alone will do nothing to fight that morning back ache.
3. Do buy a tent that has a rain flap.  Even if it doesn’t rain the flap will keep extra moisture from building up and you won’t wake up in a puddle of water.  And if it does rain you will be grateful because the flap will keep drips out.
4. Do pack extra socks.  Many people do not realize that socks are indeed very important.  It is a known fact that if you can keep your feet warm you feel warm.  Don’t risk having to sleep in wet socks.

Don’ts
1. Don’t forget matches or a lighter.  While it is true that you can light a fire without these things, unless you’ve taken some special course you probably have no chance of actually doing it.
2. Don’t leave your food out for animals to get.  Always pack it away and putit in your vehicle.  This is especially important in areas where bears live.
3. Don’t assume anything.  Do not rely on the camp grounds to provide anything for you.  Pack everything you might need including tables and chairs.
4. Don’t forget toilet paper.  This is very important even if the campgrounds has facilities.  Having to improvise for toilet paper is not fun.

These simple do’s and don’ts can help you avoid some common mistakes.  You can be sure to have everything you may need and be able to enjoy your trip without having to go without something or running to a nearby store to buy supplies.  It is always better to take more than you need instead of not enough.  Roughing it can be a great experience if you prepare ahead of time.
